Read Well® Reading/LA
Read Well is an innovative K-3 reading and language arts solution that helps students build the critical skills needed to be successful readers and learners.
The research-based program allows teachers to effectively target students at all stages of development. Through a blended approach of whole-class instruction, differentiation small-group instruction, motivating technology, and individual student practice, teachers have the flexibility they need to meet students at their skill level and adapt instruction accordingly. Read Well meets the challenges of the CCSS - along with the needs of each child.
In the first grade when students are first becoming comfortable with reading, I have found it imperative for them to have many avenues of practice. This includes their 20 minutes at home reading practice 7 days a week. If they meet this goal of 600 minutes per month they get to attend a fantastic reading party put on by our librarian. :)

Read Well® Composition/Writing
Read Well Composition is a K–2 writing program that provides explicit instruction in the writing process, writing traits, handwriting, and read-aloud
comprehension and vocabulary.
Read Well Composition was developed to reinforce and complement the skills and lessons from its Read Well reading counterpart. It is a K–2 writing program that provides explicit instruction in the writing process, writing traits, handwriting, and read-aloud comprehension and vocabulary.
Key Features:
In each unit of Read Well Composition, students create different forms of writing, working from the simple to the more complex. Bit by bit, week
by week, students learn to write like authors and complete each unit thinking, “I am a writer.”
Read Well Composition for Grade 1 is a Read Aloud-based structured writing program that provides grade-appropriate, explicit instruction
in the writing process, writing traits, handwriting, and different forms of writing.
Each unit is developed around a theme and opens with a Read Aloud segment. Outstanding children’s literature selections are included in Read Well 1 Composition that stimulate ideas, prime background knowledge, and build content knowledge. The literature in Read Well 1 Composition is designed to work in tandem with the scaffolded writing-process instruction that follows each Read Aloud segment. In each unit, students discuss, plan, and write their own narrative or expository pieces.

Homework:
Homework will be sent home weekly unless otherwise specified. It will be sent home via a packet on Monday which is due the Friday of the same week. This allows me to look over the homework on the weekend and see if mastery was achieved or if more work needs to be done in that area. If you have a problem getting it finished by that Friday, I do allow homework to be turned in the following Monday to allow for working over the weekend, however I will plan the following weeks homework based on the work that was turned in on Friday. :)
In the packet will be both reading and language arts homework. There will be areas for a parent signature for the reading parts. Especially during the beginning of the school year as I work to get students settled into their appropriate groups, please write a comment if you find that the work sent home was either too hard or too easy. If you have any questions, always feel free to ask.

Sight Word Testing:Many of the kids are on different levels for Sight Words; however everyone will be tested bi-weekly. These words are very important to learn as they are words, in most cases that cannot be sounded out or follow the typical CVC sounds. Learning the first 100-200 Fry Words will be crutial for your child's reading success.
|
Sight Words PRACTICE:The most effective way to study Sight Words is to make flash cards. As you practice, take out the words that your child continuously gets correct. This leaves more practice for the words your child struggles on. Two to four times per week start with the complete stack and remove as he/she gets them correct. If you find your child struggles with most of the words, start with a pack of 10 and add/delete as they master them.
|
Spelling Tests:
Starting roughly mid September your child will take a weekly spelling test. The list will comprise of 10 CVC and CVCe words to get your child used to this skill. I will also add 1 - 2 "extra credit" words to help with their success. The spelling words will typically be easier than their reading level as learning to spell is a different skill than reading.
The spelling lists will go home in your child's homework packet as well as will be posted here. The test will be each Monday morning so that you have the weekend to practice. :)
